Cambridge Power Box panel

3 of 4: north of Cambridge

Photograph

The left end of this view shows the northern part of Cambridge station. The central section then extends northwards, with the Motive Power Depot partially hidden behind the signalman. This is followed by Coldham's Lane Junction, with the single line to Newmarket diverging towards the bottom of the panel; east of Fulbourn, control of this line hands over to Dullingham (traditional) signal box. The track above the lower two monitors may be more of this line; the scanning of the photograph makes it impossible to tell.

Meanwhile, under and to the right of the clock is Chesterton Junction and the engineer's sidings. The topmost siding is actually the line to Swavesey (which previously extended to St.Ives and Huntingdon); this has been disused for some years, hence the collar preventing access to it. The northern exit from the sidings is just visible in the distance at the right hand end of the panel.

There are few new features on this section of the panel. The upper monitor controls the Fen Road level crossing on the main line, while the lower two control those at Cherry Hinton High Street and at Tesco, Fulbourn, both on the Newmarket branch.
