UK postcodes - the internal three-part code

Last modified: 1997-04-28

The internal three-part code is a more flexible system being used by the Royal Mail instead of the blue dots. The codes are made up of tiny pink dots, and form rows of evenly spaced bars; usually two rows, but occasionally just one.

The code uses vertical bars divided into three parts. The central part is always present, while the upper and lower parts are included or omitted as necessary to encode the postcode.
